High-achieving Chicano/Latino students from Portland State University will be honored at the ninth-annual Chicano/Latino Scholarship Gala this Saturday November 5, 2005. Over 600 community members, parents, teachers and students are expected to be in attendance at the Oregon Convention Center (777 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr., Blvd.).

The event sponsored by PSU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will award scholarships of $1000-$5000 for academic achievement and community involvement to 25 of PSU's stellar Chicano/Latino students (listed below). The event starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and speakers at 7:30 p.m.

The gala includes cocktails, dinner, dancing and celebrity guest speaker Ricardo Antonio Chavira, star on ABC's hit show "Desperate Housewives." Chavira has had reoccurring roles on shows such as "Six Feet Under" and "The Division," and guest star roles on "Joan of Arcadia," "Kingpin," "24" and "JAG." He is also an honorary spokesman for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The gala serves as the primary scholarship fundraising event to support Chicano/Latino students at PSU. The event recognizes the achievements of the Chicano/Latino community and provides an opportunity for corporations, organizations and individuals to invest in the education of the fastest-growing ethnic population in Oregon and the United States. For more information about the gala, please contact Maria Alanis Ruiz at 503-725-4447 or at alanism@pdx.edu.
