GIS - To Apply

GIS Certificate students can be admitted Fall, Winter, or Spring terms.

APPLICATION DEADLINES:

For Fall/Winter terms: May 1st (start accepting applications February 1, 2015)

For Spring term: January 15th (start accepting applications November 2, 2014)

In order to be admitted to the certificate program you must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. (If your GPA is between 2.75-3.0, you can be admitted conditionally.) Current PSU graduate students must be in good academic standing.

Prospective applicants must submit two online applications: 1) to the University Admissions Office and 2) to the Department of Geography. The admissions process will be delayed if either application is incomplete.

Note: If you are currently enrolled in a PSU graduate program, you do not need to submit the University Admissions Office application. Instead, submit a GO-19M (masters) or GO-19D (doctoral) form signed by your current program advisor, scanned, and submitted digitally to the Geography Department. 

1. Apply to the University for Graduate Admission

Under Student Type, applicants must select "2a Graduate Master" and then select either "Geography, MA" or "Geography, MS" as the Planned Curriculum. 
The student type information is critical for setting up the correct form in the online application system. If the value doesn't set correctly, the application might not be removed for admission to the GIS certificate program. The Planned Curriculum information is less important - the departmental admission letter will overwrite the planned curriculum information submitted on the application.

2. Apply to the Department of Geography (through CollegeNet)

Please note: The Department of Geography online application system allows for the electronic submission of all components of our application. The application will require you to provide supplemental materials meeting specific criteria as outlined below.

Supplemental Materials

• A statement of purpose explaining your reasons for choosing to undertake the Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems. You will be asked to upload your personal statement in one of the following supported file types: PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, or TXT.

• A transcript from each post‐secondary institution you have attended is required. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. You will be asked to upload each transcript in one of the following supported file types: PDF, JPG, PNG, GIF, or TIF.

• Recommendation form from one academic (or other) professional who can comment on your academic performance or attest to your skills as they pertain to your selected program of study. You will need to enter the name and email address for the individual before selecting the “Submit Recommendation Request” button. Once selected, the recommender will be sent instructions for completing the form. You can see the status of the referral by going to the online application system and selecting the link titled “Review Your Activity”.
