Known as one of the best writers in broadcasting and winner of the Peabody Award, Simon has reported from all 50 states, covered presidential campaigns, eight wars and reported from Central America, Africa, India, the Middle East and the Caribbean. The brunch with Scott Simon headlines PSU Weekend, which also features ten free lectures on a variety of topics including:

* “Victory in Iraq: You Can’t Get There from Here,” Gen. Merrill “Tony” McPeak
* “Comics as the New Literature,” Dark Horse Comic founder Mike Richardson, '77
* “Backstage at the PSU Opera,” Christine Meadows, artistic director, PSU
* “Fuel for Thought,” Robert Bertini, director, Center for Transportation Studies, PSU

Tickets for the brunch are $30; lecture-only admission is $15 and $10 for students. The brunch will be held in the ballroom at Portland State’s Smith Memorial Student Union (1825 S.W. Broadway, third floor).

A VIP reception at the Oregon Culinary Institute (1701 SW Jefferson) will be held on Friday, October 20, and will give guests the opportunity to meet and talk with Scott Simon in person. Tickets for the reception, which include entrance to Simon’s brunch the next day, cost $125. Members of the public who would like to attend either event should call 503-725-4949 or email alumni@pdx.edu for reservations. Media should e-mail or fax interview or seating requests to Jim Turner at jhturner@pdx.edu or 503-725-5074.

Scott Simon joined NPR in 1977. In 2002, Simon took leave of his post at “Weekend Edition” to cover the war in Afghanistan. He has received numerous honors for his reporting and was part of NPR news teams that won the prestigious Alfred I. du Pont-Columbia University Awards. In addition to hosting “Weekend Edition,” he is finishing a new book on Jackie Robinson, Brooklyn Knight that's expected in bookstores this fall, when he also will be hosting the PBS television special Voices of Vision. His first book, Home and Away, Memoir of a Fan, was released in 2000 to critical acclaim.

PSU Weekend this year runs October 20–21 and offers ten free lectures on Seminar Day, Saturday, October 21. All lectures are held in the Smith Memorial Student Union unless otherwise noted.
