Honors students James Lopez and Amber Smith created the student group Tea with TED to bring peers from various disciplines and backgrounds together to watch TED Talks, explore "Ideas worth sharing," and consider divergent perspectives on current issues.
Portland State University is part of the Ashoka U Changemaker Campus consortium, a select group of institutions of higher education that demonstrate commitment and cutting edge approaches to galvanizing solutions to major human and environmental challenges. Ashoka believes in an "Everyone a Changemaker" world. So does Portland State.
In addition to founding their student group as freshmen, Amber and James are both in the Urban Honors program at PSU. James is studying economics and social business, works as a collective member at PSU's Food for Thought Cafe, and is a member of the Professionals of Portland Toastmasters group.
Amber is studying geography and Turkish, is a Sustainability Scholar in the Urban Honors program, has a research internship with the city of Portland, and works with Campus Rec leading trips in the Outdoor Program and instructing rock climbing classes. She recently completed a fellowship with the American Research Institute in Turkey, and is an active member and organizer for the PSU Student Union and the Student Action Coalition.
