For 40 years from 1870 to 1909, an extensive community of Chinese farmers lived and farmed in three main areas of Portland, Oregon:

  • the Goose Hollow neighborhood, farming the steep slopes of the Tanner Creek Gulch;
  • Slabtown, farming the floodplains of the Johnson Creek, Balch Creek and Guild's Lake areas;
  • and in the Albina, Mt. Tabor, and Sylvan areas of Portland.

The Chinese immigrant farms in the Goose Hollow area covered twenty-one acres, including the slopes and the gulch where Lincoln High School, the Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club, and Multnomah Stadium (named Civic Stadium in 1966) were later built.

Come and discover this intriguing chapter in Portland's history, as uncovered by PSU Professor Tracy Prince while researching her books on Goose Hollow and Slabtown with many never before seen photos, including those of the Chinese farmers and their residences.
