Student Financial Aid Requirements

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Students interested in receiving federal student aid will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for each school year that they wish to be considered for aid and be admitted to Portland State University.

As part of the calculation for financial aid, your dependent student may be selected for a process called verification. In this process, we will compare the information provided on your Federal tax forms from the previous year with the information provided on the FAFSA for the upcoming school year.

Students can be selected for verification either because information on their application appears to have errors, or because conflicting information needs to be resolved. Once a student has been selected for verification, the requested materials must be submitted before aid can be awarded or disbursed.

If any items have to be corrected, our office will send corrections to the federal processor electronically. Your dependent student will receive a new, non-correctable Student Aid Report (SAR) Information Acknowledgement, which allows your dependent student to see the changes made and any resulting changes to the estimated family contribution (EFC).

The student verification forms are located in the Outstanding Requirements section on the PSU Student Information System. The Parent Verification forms are available to download and print at Verification Materials for Students and Parents. Parents will need to either fax (503- 725-5965) or drop off the forms to the PSU Office of Student Financial Aid.

Change in Financial Circumstances

If parents or families are experiencing unusually high medical expenses or involuntary loss of income during the academic year, please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid to discuss your financial aid status.
