FAQ: Will receiving an outside scholarship affect my financial aid?

Many students from Portland State receive scholarships and grants from outside organizations. The receipt of any scholarship or grant not listed on the award notification must be reported to the Office of Financial Aid as soon as the student is notified of the award. Please indicate the name of the award and the amount of the award. Sometimes, scholarships and other outside funding will replace other types of financial aid which already exist in your financial aid package.

 Why is this?

The financial aid office is looking to see if your overall combined aid package (including your new scholarship) will exceed your estimated cost of attendance. No federal financial aid can exceed this estimated cost of attendance. If the combination of your existing financial aid and your new scholarship does not exceed your cost of attendance, then your existing financial aid will not be reduced and the scholarship will be added. If the combination of your existing financial aid and your new scholarship does exceed your cost of attendance, the financial aid office will then switch out some of your less preferable funds (like loans) with your new scholarship. If you have questions about adding a scholarship to your award let us know! 503.725.3461
