* An examination of the literature on conflict between work and family roles suggests that work-family conflict exists when (1) time devoted to the requirements of one role makes it difficult to fulfill requirements of another (2) strain from participation in one role makes it difficult to fulfill requirements of another; and (3) specific behaviors required by one role make it difficult to fulfill the requirements of another.
* Role conflict: the simultaneous occurrence of two or more sets of pressures such that compliance with one would make more difficult compliance with the other.
* Interrole conflict: a form of role conflict in which the sets of opposing pressures arise from participation in different roles. * Work-family conflict: a form of interrole conflict in which the role pressures from the work and family domains are mutually incompatible in some respect. (Time, strain and behavior based conflicts).
* Any role characteristic that affects time involvement, strain, or behavior within a role can serve as an antecedent
