What is an affidavit of support? Is it acceptable for my sponsor to write a letter instead of filling out the form?
An affidavit of support is a document completed by your sponsor certifying that they will use funds (verified to Portland State in bank statements) for your educational and living expenses. Although Portland State does have a Statement of Financial Support form, your sponsor may submit the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services I-134 Affidavit of Support form or a letter instead. The letter should include
- your name and date of birth or Portland State ID number
- your sponsor's name(s)
- that the sponsor will use funds verified to Portland State in bank statements for your educational and living expenses
- your sponsor's signature and the date
