FAQ: What entrance exams are required and what do I have to score?

Applicants must submit current (less than 5 years old) scores for either the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). There is not a cut off score for admission but a combined GRE verbal and math score of 1000 or a MAT score of 50 are recommended. Registration materials are available at the PSU Testing Services Center in the Smith Memorial Center in room M342 (503-725-4428) or by visiting the GRE or MAT website.

Applicants to the School Counseling track are also required to take and pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST), unless they hold a current Oregon teaching license. Registration materials are available in the Graduate School of Education Room 204 or from the CBEST website. Portland State University Testing Services has additional test information and can be reached by phone at 503-725-4428. If the CBEST exam is taken please be aware that you will need to provide a photocopy of the test results you receive even if you request scores to be sent to Portland State University. The format of CBEST reports does not allow us to keep a complete copy with your application.

All tests should be taken early enough to allow the results to reach the Counselor Education Department by the deadline; this usually requires tests to be taken during November or December at the latest. It is the applicant's responsibility to register for the exam and make sure the scores are provided to the Department. Study materials for the entrance exams are available at the Portland State University Bookstore and from the testing organizations themselves.
