Meet William Holden
Meet William Holden

William Holden was a participant in the 2011 Critical Language Scholarship Program through the United States' State Department. He was one of about 25 students to study Russian language through an intensive, immersion-oriented curriculum at the KORA Institute in Vladimir, Russia. Students in this program received lessons in history, Russian literature, grammar, phonetics and media. All of these courses were conducted in Russian, and students were forbidden from using English at the KORA Institute throughout the day, as well as with their Russian host families. The Critical Language Scholarship Program funds all of the participant students’ expenses for the duration of their study, including flights, meals, transportation, room and board. In addition to studying in the University Honors Program, William is a participant in the Russian Flagship Program here at PSU. As a history student, he intends to pursue European intellectual history and to utilize Russian language for these purposes. In this picture, William can be seen at the far left with several other Critical Language Scholars on their cultural excursion to Bogolyubovo, a small village near Vladimir.
