Free lecture at PSU to discuss Japanese perspectives on North Korea, Oct. 11

Toshimitsu Shigemura, a professor at Waseda University in Tokyo and a renowned scholar of North Korea, will present a free public lecture “A Japanese Perspective on North Korea” at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Portland State University (PSU). It will be held at 328 Smith Memorial Student Union, 1825 SW Broadway.

His lecture will cover:

U.S. and North Korean nuclear negotiations and “clashes of mutual ignorance of culture,”

The new leadership in North Korea, and its relationship with China and South Korea,

The diplomatic conflicts between Japan and South Korea, and

The future of the U.S. alliances with Japan and South Korea.

The event is presented by the PSU Center for Japanese Studies, and is co-sponsored by the Mark Spencer Hotel and the PSU Institute for Asian Studies.
