Environment and Democracy

The first woman to earn a PhD in East Africa, Dr. Wangari Maathai galvanized rural women to plant over 30 million trees, restoring damaged ecosystems while increasing women's political involvement and economic status. Dr. Maathai makes the crucial link between environmental sustainability, democracy and peace. Elected to parliament with an unprecedented 98% of the vote, Wangari Maathai is one of the most influential women of her generation.
