The Outdoor Program, in conjunction with the Wilderness Medical Associates
(WMA), is hosting an exciting course in backcountry medicine. The Wilderness
First Responder course is essential for anyone who spends significant time in
remote places or who has a professional career in the outdoors. This intensive
course is designed specifically for handling outdoor emergencies where 911
services may be incapable of providing timely assistance.
This certification is recognized nation-wide and takes 5 days to complete in addition to 24 hours of pre-course work. The Wilderness First Responder course will prepare you to make difficult medical decisions. This course is fast-paced and engaging. You will spend time outside of the classroom doing hands-on skills and realistic scenarios. In addition to scenarios, you will participate in full-scale mock rescues. The curriculum encompasses a wide range of topics including long-term patient care, wound management, straightening angulated fractures, reducing dislocations, litter packaging and administering medications. You will complete this course with the tools and confidence to manage patients in the backcountry for multiple days.
The Wilderness Medical Associates WFR course has become the gold-standard of medical training for outdoor educators, guides, expedition medics and sail training crews. The five-day option covers the same material and meets the same standards as those applied to the traditional eight-day course. It is designed for professionals who have less time available for on-site training, but have the self-discipline to complete approximately 24 hours of pre-course preparation.
You should register at least 2 weeks prior to the course start to allow time
for assigned reading, case reviews, and self-assessment tests. Conscientious
preparation is essential for success. On-site training will reinforce and expand
on the knowledge you’ve already acquired.
All participants who successfully complete the Wilderness First Responder course will receive certification from Wilderness Medical Associates, valid for three years. The certification includes WMA basic life support and CPR. The Wilderness Medical Associates WFR course meets or exceeds all requirements in the National First Responder curriculum, and is Coast Guard approved under CFR 46.
