Dr. Hughes received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Washington. She has worked on archaeological projects in the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Northwest and Great Britain. Besides her expertise in bone geochemistry, Hughes has published papers on stone tool technology, including "Getting to the point: evolutionary change in prehistoric weaponry", in the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, 1998.
