uni.jpgU-N-I: United is a Portland State University, student led, community based fundraiser for the city’s new R.E.A.L Prep Academy – an arts-integrated charter school that uses curriculum featuring themes from African and other global Diasporas to teach academic subjects through music, dance, spoken word and the visual and entertainment arts.

This youth oriented performance/fundraiser will feature spoken word poets, hip-hop artists, dancers, singers, and visual artists who use art as a medium to promote social justice. Headlining Turiya Autry, one of Portland’s premier and most potent poets, up-and-coming hip hop artist Burnell Washburn out of Salt Lake City, and emceed by award winning rapper/social activist, Jasiri X from Pittsburg, this show is entirely planned, implemented, and hosted by freshman students at Portland State, many of whom are first generation college students representing ethnic minorities.

An extension of Portland State University's unique and award-winning program, University Studies, this service learning fundraiser is an education model that provides students with integrated, connected learning experiences that lay the foundation for lifelong intellectual development and engagement with the community, upholding Portland State’s model to “let knowledge serve the city.”

Implementing material and theories from their course theme, “Race and Social Justice,” these freshman students modeled U-N-I as a platform to give artists an opportunity to use art as a means to speak out and promote social awareness and change. A silent auction showcasing local artists and businesses will precede the show, and many of Portland’s social advocacy groups will host informative booths to highlight community solidarity around the city. Tickets are $10 per person, $5 for students and can be purchased online or at the door.

100% of the profits raised (including ticket sales), will be donated to R.E.A.L Prep Charter Academy as a scholarship to help support students’ academic and artist development though attending conferences, workshops, and collaborating with other artists in the industry in order to expand their academic and career opportunities.
