Twelve years ago, an unsolved Boston murder launched an international movement.
This week, Portland State's Queer Resource Center joins organizations around the world to honor Rita Hester and all transgender victims of violence.
PSU's Transgender Empowerment Week includes readings, performances, faculty training and panel discussions in conjunction with the Q Center and Linfield College. A 6 p.m. remembrance and vigil will be held Saturday, the Transgender Day of Remembrance, at Hoffman Hall at PSU.
This year's events focus on the experiences of transgender women of color, who suffer the most violence, according to organizers.
Like many murders of transgender people, Hester's death remains unsolved.
