Begun in fall 2004, the Social Sustainability Colloquium is open to the entire campus and the broader community. The colloquium contributes to building the body of knowledge that constitutes Social Sustainability and has led to the launch of a Social Sustainability Network and publication of an edited volume, Understanding the Social Dimension of Sustainability (Dillard, Dujon & King, 2009), from which the working definition of social sustainability comes:
Social sustainability includes both the processes and the institutions that promote social health and well being in current and future generations, and the social practices necessary to facilitate greater environmental and economic sustainability.
A second volume is currently in process: Social Sustainability: A Multilevel Approach to Social Inclusion.
