Program Details

Fourteen students have been selected to participate in this year's "Global Aging and Health: Enhancing Communities in Nicaragua," a program of Portland State University and the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation. Our group will be working for two weeks this summer with elders in Boaco, Nicaragua, giving approximately 1,800 hours of volunteer service during our trip. The area around Boaco has been heavily affected by a severe drought and global economic conditions. For the past six years this program has sent students to work on projects that help increase the food supply for elders without family, create shelters from the weather, and set up clinics to attend to untreated health conditions, all with an eye toward sustainability and improved local capacity.

We are asking for assistance to help with the cost of the trip which includes airfare, vaccinations, housing, food, supplies for our work, in-country transportation, etc. This project helps some of our students complete their Capstone education requirement which is needed for an undergraduate degree. The cost of this trip, including airfare, housing, food, supplies for their work, in-country transportation, etc. is $3,600 per student. All donations go directly to fundraising for student scholarships. 100% of money raised will be used to help students complete their service-learning course. JFR is a non-profit charitable 501 (c) 3 organization registered in the state of Oregon, so all donations are tax-deductible.
