The Portland State University Friends of History will present its 2005 Endowed Lecture in History on Thursday, March 10th at 7:30 PM. The lecture "Colonial War Crimes in Kenya: Prospects for Reconciliation" will be given by Dr. Caroline Elkins, Professor of History at Harvard University, and author of the newly published book, _Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain's Gulag in Kenya_ (NY: Henry Holt & Co., 2005).

Dr. Elkins' work examines the legacy of British colonialism, and the internment of Kenya's largest ethnic group in the aftermath of the Mau Mau uprising of the 1950s. How did the Kikuyu population survive the supposed "civilizing" atmosphere of the camps? What has been done, or needs still to be done, to heal wounds that are still felt nearly 50 years later?
