Pruitt-Igoe and Other Architectural Fictions: urbanLAB::PDX Discussion

"Pruitt Igoe and Other Architectural Fictions" celebrates fictions that take architecture and the built environment as a catalyst for fiction, (creative) non-fiction, or poetry. Taking inspiration from Pruitt-Igoe, an American public housing project that was transformed from utopian to dystopian in a mere twenty years -- and has gone on to live in myth in American culture -- this event is an opportunity to share and examine the stories we tell about the built world around us. Readers include Dan DeWeese, author of Disorder: Stories (Propeller Books, 2012), Coleman Stevenson, author of The Accidental Rarefication of Pattern #5609 (Bedouin Books, 2012), Alexis Smith author of Glaciers (Tin House Books, 2012), Ismet Prcic, author of Shards (Grove Press, 2011) and the event’s organizer, Nora Wendl, Assistant Professor of Architecture, Portland State University.

This discussion is held in connection with the Pruitt-Igoe Now exhibit on view from November 1 through December 21 at the AIA Portland | Center for Architecture. Free and open to the public.

Where: AIA Portland | Center for Architecture, 403 NW 11th Avenue (at Flanders), Portland, Oregon
