Acclaimed artist and musician Aki Onda has organized a rare concert from some of the pioneering forces of Japan’s avant-garde sound and music scene: Akio Suzuki, Gozo Yoshimasu, and Otomo Yoshihide. While the three artists share an experimental approach to sound perception, production, and presentation, their individual practices are each unmistakably their own. It’s an evening of music that crosses between literature, sound art, conceptual performance, and improvisation.
With his uniquely rhythmic and intense style of recitation, poet Gozo Yoshimasu will read his work in collaboration with Otomo Yoshihide, an experimental guitarist/turntablist and leading figure in contemporary noise and improvisation. Sound artist Akio Suzuki will perform solo on a range of arcane and unique instruments, from an ancient iwabue stone flute, passed down through his family for many generations, to an Analapos, an instrument of his own invention that creates echoes through the acoustic transmissions of a spiral cord stretched between two metal cylinders. Together, these ground-breaking artists will invite the audience to reconsider their relationship to sound and the act of listening.
