Opera Appreciation Lecture Series: Madame Butterfly

An examination of Giacomo Puccini's poignant opera telling the tale of a fragile Japanese girl's love for an American naval officer who fails to understand the intensity of her devotion. On returning to meet her again after some time apart, he discovers that he is the father of her child. Her anguished reaction when she learns the cavalier nature of his commitment to her provides the story's heartrending conclusion. The Opera Appreciation Lecture Series is designed for the opera aficionado, the newcomer, and everyone in between, this series of eight lectures is presented by the witty, articulate, and knowledgeable Michael Berkson. In addition to exploring the cultural, historical, and conventional meanings of opera, consideration will be given to the appeal of opera and its sometimes romanticized and foreign image. Lectures are supported by video and student performances.
