Statement: In A Space of Flows, Vanessa Calvert explores the construct of cyberspace by creating an interactive lounge where space disconnects from place and begins to operate outside linear progressions. Informed by Manuel Castells’ theories on the rise of the informational society as well as Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopias, A Space of Flows presents sound and interactive sculpture as an abstract meditation on cyberspace inviting the viewer to contemplate experiences not bound by traditional models of space. The installation creates an environment that allows the viewer to look at space and time, released from the confines of geography, as it constantly bends and folds upon itself.
