Statement: The work in I Am a Containerful of Memories started as photo studies of clutter in the artist’s home and shifted to focus on the messes and creations particular to her children’s play. These domestic landscapes present a record of human activity and speak to the importance of everyday routine. More specifically, the paintings of children’s play engage the subject of creativity directly and accentuate the contrast between the relative permanence of painting and the fleeting nature of the scenes and fragile objects. The viewer is asked to consider the fictional nature of memory, which like the bronzing of baby shoes, distorts experience in an attempt to preserve it.
