Literary Statistical Analysis (LSA): Computer analysis of Data that Does the Statistical Work for You, Plus a Discussion of R, the Open Source, Free Statistics Software on which the System is Based.

LSA provides an evaluation of assumptions, analysis, graphics, selection of procedures, and a full interpretation of the results all expressed as a running narrative. The model is the StarTrek computer in which Spock turns the data over and the computer says Working...Working and then explains everything in plain English. Currently the only application of LSA developed here is the independent groups t-test that compares two different means, such as mean salary for men vs. mean salary for women. The LSA system developed here is based entirely on open-source components, including the Windows, Mac and Linux statistical system called R that rivals mainstream, and expensive, statistical software such as Minitab or SPSS. The use of R for basic statistical analysis is also discussed. A free R download is available at
