Lecture: Migration, Murder and Politics: Windigo Trials in the Canadian West with Dr. Shawn Smallman
As English speaking settlers moved onto Canada's prairies after 1869, they challenged the authority of both First Nations and Metis peoples, which provoked multiple forms of resistance. This political context in turn defined a series of murder trials, as Cree and Anishinaabeg peoples were convicted for killing people perceived to be possessed by the Windigo spirit.
