The Institsute for Asian Studies and Confucius Institute at Portland State University are pleased to welcome Asian historian, Ezra Vogel, to the PSU campus, for a lecture & discussion about his newly released book Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China.
Once described by Mao Zedong as a "needle inside a ball of cotton," Deng Xiaoping was the pragmatic yet disciplined driving force behind China's radical transformation in the late 20th century. This landmark biography in English by historian Ezra F. Vogel charts Deng's tumultuous rise to power, during which he endured accusations, purges and even exile before becoming China's preeminent leader in the late 70's and through the 1980's.
