An Associate Professor of English at Nassau Community College, Professor Gordon specializes in science fiction and Animal Studies. She is a former president of the Science Fiction Research Association, an editor for the journals Science Fiction Studies and Humanimalia and the co-editor of Blood Read: The Vampire as Metaphor in Contemporary Culture (1997) and Edging Into the Future: Science Fiction as Contemporary Cultural Transformation (2002).
The Alternate Realities Group seeks to gather scholars in various disciplines for discussion and support for projects that explore representations of alternate realities such as science fiction, utopia, dystopia, uchrony, and fantasy in all time periods. Within the framework of alternative representations, discussions may address issues in eco-criticism, architecture, media depictions, political institutions, technology, science, gender relations, etc. The group meets monthly in the Portland Center for Public Humanities Office.
