This is the inaugural ISCD speaker series of The School of Urban Studies & Planning highlighting community development programs and initiatives that underscore PSU’s sustainability mission. This year’s speakers have strong ties to The School of Urban Studies & Planning and bring an incredible breadth and depth of experience to share. All sessions are free and open to the public.

Carolyn Shapiro, P.E., is a mechanical engineer with over 25 years of professional engineering experience covering design, field engineering, environmental consulting, product and technology development, and project management. She earned her bachelor's and master's degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Carolyn has served as the Engineers Without Borders-USA Les Anglais, Haiti water project lead since its inception in 2008.
Lisa Peffer, is a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning Candidate at Portland State University candidate. She has over 12 years experience in community involvement, environmental planning and education, event planning, emergency response and mitigation planning. She earned her bachelor's degree in Geography from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and studied community-based disaster recovery from Ball State University and Colorado State University's International Institute for Disaster Management. Lisa is the public outreach lead for the Engineers Without Borders-USA Les Anglais, Haiti sanitation project.
