The Portland State University Institute for Asian Studies is pleased to partner with the dedicated volunteers of the Portland LanSu Chinese Garden to present an on-going monthly program--

 - First Saturday: an East Asian Program Series -

This series features lectures on the gardens, architecture, art and historical culture of China and East Asia and showcases connections with the Pacific NW.

This year's theme is Windows into Beauty and Meaning.

DATE:  Every first Saturday of the month.   |    TIME:   9:30 - 11:00am

Lectures are free and open to public.

FALL SCHEDULE:

Saturday, October 1, 9:30-11:00am    |     Location:  Hoyt Arboretum, Washington Park

Martin Nicholson, Curator of the Hoyt Arboretum in Washington Park will lead a guided tour and lecture:  "Experiencing Autumn and Learning about the conservation of Maples."   

Saturday, November 5, 9:30-11:00am     |    Location:  PSU Campus, Urban Center Bldg, room 250

Sean Hogan will present a lecture: "Sensory Plants in the Scholar's Garden to Awaken and Inspire."

Saturday, December 3, 9:30-11:00am   |  Location:  PSU campus, Urban Center Bldg, room 250

Cynthia Haruyama, Executive Director of the Portland LanSu Chinese Garden, will present a talk about the garden staff's visits to Suzhou and to Suzhou designed gardens in the United States:

"Lessons from Abroad: Examining issues of relevance and identity for a Suzhou-style garden in 21st century North America"
