Film: Boyz N The Hood
Friday, May 15, 2009 - 7:00pm

A gritty examination of life in South Central LA, circa early 90's, John Singleton's debut film opened the nation's eyes to a whole new world.  The film felt as if it put images to the words of LA's "gangsta rap", reinforced by Ice Cube's acting debut.  The film follows three young men growing up and entering adulthood.  Each character has his flaws and fears.  Dough Boy (Ice Cube) can't imagine life outside the ‘hood while his brother Rickey (Morris Chestnut) has football dreams and a college career at USC on the horizon.  Their childhood friend, Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr) who looks to his father (Laurence Fishburne) for guidance in developing his character and becoming a man.  Full of powerful performances, the film attempts to cover a host of problems from African-American business practices to the bias of the SAT test.  Written while still in film school, at 24, Singleton became the youngest person to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar.
