Faculty Favorite Lecture: Dr. Eric Mankowski presents
"Sexual Assault and Rape Among PSU Students:
Prevalence and Prevention Strategies"

April 24th, 1:00pm - 3:00pm
at the Women's Resource Center
of Portland State University

Sexual offenses are underreported to authorities, with important consequences for intervention and prevention efforts. Anonymous reports by a large sample of Portland State University undergraduate psychology students in 2006 indicate a high prevalence of sexual assault and rape perpetration, especially by males. A marked discrepancy is found between the prevalence of forcible sexual offenses among PSU students compared to offenses reported to campus police. These data have important implications for rape prevention strategies on college campuses. Educational programs that engage men and “bystanders” are recommended in light of the prevalence and characteristics of gendered violence and sexual assault.

Dr. Eric Mankowski (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is a community and social psychologist, broadly interested in the relationship between individual, group, and community functioning, especially in area of mental health. In particular, he focuses on understanding how masculinity is socially constructed and its connection to violence, substance abuse and other health and social problems. Dr. Mankowski is a faculty member in PSU's Department of Psychology.

This presentation is part of a month-long series of events in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).
