Taking Root tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, whose simple act of planting trees grew into a national movement to safeguard the environment, protect human righs, and defend democracy—a movement for which this charismatic woman became an iconic inspiration. Maathai's mobilization of African women was not limited to its vision to work for sustainble development; she saw tree-planting in a broader perspective which would include democracy, women's rights, and international solidarity. Dr. Maathai was the first African woman to receive a Nobel Peace Prize, the first women in central and east Africa to receive a doctorate degree, and the first female professor in her native country of Kenya.
