Democracy in the World: Prospects and Perils

Stanford Professor Larry Diamond speaks at Portland State University

Larry Diamond is the world's foremost expert on democracy and democratization around the world. In this talk, based on his new book "The Spirit of Democracy" Diamond will describe the spread of democracy around the world as well as recent setbacks, including evidence of a looming global "democratic recession". Diamond will outline a strategy for the promotion of democracy that is sensitive to local conditions while also effective in promoting stable, efficient, and just rule.
