WHAT: "College: Yes You Can," also called "Universidad: Si Puede," a free program for middle school-age Latino students and their families to show how to prepare for college.
WHERE: Peter Stott Center, 1825 SW Broadway, on the Portland State University campus
"College: Yes You Can" is the result of a project by Oregon's public universities and community colleges called the Middle School Outreach Consortium. Its goal is to make college more accessible to underrepresented students by reaching out to middle school students and families to promote a college-going culture.
The PSU event is the first of four "College: Yes You Can" programs scheduled throughout the state. The others will be held in May and June in Albany, Medford and La Grande. The PSU program will be broken into student sessions and parent sessions, covering topics such as high school and college preparation, financial aid and scholarships and careers. Parking and lunch will be provided.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This program is not to be confused with "El Poder de la Mujer," a conference for Latina girls and young women originally scheduled for April 27 at PSU. That event has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Oct. 12.
