Center for Women, Politics & Policy Hosts Karaoke FUNraiser

Want to sing your heart out or sing along for a great cause?

Come join the Center for Women, Politics & Policy at Voicebox Karaoke for an evening of fun, friends, and fundraising for the 2012 National Day of Service project!

Through partnerships with Regence Group of Oregon and Washington and the Assistance League of Portland, CWPP will be collecting supplies and constructing care packages for local sexual assault victims, and invites members of the Portland community to contribute and lend a helping hand to the effort. All proceeds from the evening will go towards supplies for the kits.

What: Karaoke FUNraiser!
When: Thursday, November 10, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Where: Voicebox Karaoke, 2112 Northwest Hoyt Street
Who: All ages are welcome!
How much: $10-$25 sliding scale cover charge

“300 patients are examined for sexual assault in Portland area emergency rooms each year. When sexual assault patients are seen, it is directly following a very traumatic event. Being able to offer the patient a bag of new, comfortable clothes and toiletries is a small gesture, but can be an enormous comfort to someone who is feeling particularly vulnerable.” — Makenzy Byrum, a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for Rapid SAVE Investigation

The CWPP constructs Dignity Kits to distribute to area emergency rooms to provide patients with adequate clothing and toiletries for their trip home, since part of the evidence collection requires that the patient’s clothing and undergarments are retained as evidence.  The supplies in these packages can offer a measure of comfort and dignity in a time of panic and grief.

This year we would like to provide all 300 Dignity Kits and assemble them on MLK Day of Service so Portland emergency rooms are adequately stocked with enough care packages for every person that will come through their doors after a sexual assault this year.

Just $25 can provide a Dignity Kit for someone in a time of panic and grief.

This project was created by The Center for Women, Politics & Policy (CWPP) at Portland State University in response to President Obama's call for community participation in Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service.
