The Big Sleep
US 1946
Director: Howard Hawks

The chemistry between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall was never more palpable than in Hawks' adaptation of Raymond Chandler's classic novel. Bogart plays Philip Marlowe, hired by wealthy socialite Vivian Rutledge (Bacall) to keep an eye on her younger sister, who she fears has fallen in with the wrong crowd. As Marlowe's investigation deepens, his every effort is complicated by mobsters, mayhem and murder, while a burgeoning romance with Vivian promises to draw him ever deeper into a seemingly inescapable web of betrayal and deceit.
