Caryl Churchill's VINEGAR TOM
This exciting play by acclaimed Obie Award-winning British playwright Caryl Churchill was created in association with a British feminist theatre collective who requested a play about witches. It tells the story of two 17th century farmwomen who are named as witches by a man whom they have spurned sexually, juxtaposing scenes from the English witch-hunts of the 1650s with contemporary musical commentary. The connection between fear of female sexuality and witch hysteria is shown to be at the root of many of society's problems. "I wanted to write a play about witches with no witches in it," Churchill tells us, "a play not about evil, hysteria and possession by the devil but about poverty, humiliation and prejudice, and how the women accused of witchcraft saw themselves."
"Vinegar Tom" is directed by Devon Allen and designed by Glenn Gauer. Costume designs are by Sandra Zodnik, and original music is by PSU Music Department graduate student, Valery Saul.
"Vinegar Tom" is for mature audiences.
