The IELP offers courses that help students improve their English skills and transition into becoming a PSU student. Our Academic Preparation for Undergraduate Studies and Academic Preparation for Graduate Studies are great tools that help students achieve their goals.
Undergraduate and Post-Baccalaureate Students
Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students can be admitted to PSU with no TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE score or a score that is below PSU’s language proficiency requirement for undergraduates. Students can build their academic English skills and meet PSU’s language proficiency requirement by studying in the IELP and successfully completing Level 5.
The IELP offers a pathway into the university for students admitted to PSU. Students in the IELP have an opportunity to develop strong academic English skills and become familiar with Portland State University, American culture and life in Portland. Students in Levels 4 and 5 can take a PSU class in addition to their IELP courses. The IELP advisor works closely with students to help them transition successfully into their academic department. Students can earn up to 24 college credits in their Level 4 and 5 IELP classes. These credits can be applied as elective credits toward an undergraduate degree at PSU.
Students admitted to the IELP can apply to PSU while they are studying in the IELP. To learn more about applying to PSU, visit the Admission's office International Applicant site.
Graduate students at Portland State University are required to submit a passing TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE score. Some graduate departments may admit highly qualified students who have not met PSU’s graduate-level language proficiency requirement with an expectation that the student will submit the required language score before beginning full-time study in the department. Please contact the graduate coordinator in your department with questions about admission before submitting a passing TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE score. The IELP is not involved in admission decisions for graduate (or undergraduate) students. Completion of IELP courses does not replace PSU's language proficiency requirement for graduate students.
Students who are admitted to a graduate program at Portland State University without meeting PSU’s language proficiency requirement can study in the IELP to build their academic English skills and familiarize themselves with the academic culture of American universities. The IELP offers courses designed specifically to support the needs of graduate students. The IELP advisor will work closely with admitted graduate students and their academic department to help them transition successfully into their field of study. Students may be able to take a graduate course concurrently with their IELP courses once they have completed Level 4.
