Rosalyn McKeown , Ph.D.

Rosalyn McKeown is the LECL program coordinator in the Educational Leadership and Policy Department (ELP) in the Graduate School of Education at Portland State University. Rosalyn earned a doctoral degree in geography from the University of Oregon.
Rosalyn's current research focuses on education for a more sustainable future in both the formal and nonformal sectors of the education community. Rosalyn is the primary author of the internationally popular Education for Sustainable Development Toolkit, which can be found on the Internet at http://www.esdtoolkit.org. This easy to use manual for creating locally relevant and culturally appropriate sustainability education programs has received over 100,000 hits on the WWW. Rosalyn has received requests to translate the Toolkit into many languages.
Rosalyn is also Secretariat to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Chair, Secretariat, and International Network of Teacher Education Institutions recently completed Guidelines and Recommendations on Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability, which was published by UNESCO in the six UN languages. The Guidelines are the result of several years of action research in 30 institutions of teacher education in 28 countries.
Rosalyn has been involved in a variety of educational programs. She was co-director of the Tennessee Solid Waste Education Project for 10 years and helped develop the TVA Water Sourcebook for Grades 3 – 5. She also organized the River-to-River Russian-American teacher exchange program. In addition she was a secondary school teacher.
Rosalyn recently won an award from the North American Association for Environmental Education for outstanding contribution to environmental education by an individual working at the global level.
