The Portland State University Jazz Band won several awards at the 2011 Reno Jazz Festival, April 7 through 10.

PSU's six-person jazz combo consisting of trombonist Lars Campbell, saxophonist Elysia Strauss, bassist Brett McConnell, guitarist Kyle Smith and Drummer Kyle Owen took second place out of 20 combos in the four-year University Division. PSU's 20-person Big Band placed fourth out of 15 bands in the four-year University Division. Campbell, a graduate student, won Most Outstanding College Performer on trombone.

The Reno Jazz Festival Web site (http://www.unr.edu/rjf/welcome.htm) states "Since the festival's inception in 1962, both it and its sponsor, the University of Nevada, Reno, have grown in size and stature. Indeed, the Reno Jazz Festival now ranks as one of the largest and most vibrant of its kind in the nation, attracting more than 8,000 participants and guests in 2010."
