Driving on Domestic Energy

We know electric vehicles owners and operators are a discerning bunch. They have gotten behind EVs for a whole bunch of reasons: quiet operation, energy efficiency, low maintenance, the ability to fuel up at home, and zero tailpipe emissions. These are all perfectly valid factors, but we believe the ability of these vehicles to run on homegrown energy - electricity - is particularly compelling.

Residents of the Pacific Northwest are privileged to have access to hydro generation from the Columbia River as well as a growing mix of renewable wind and solar power. Our electrical rates are comparatively low and the price of electricity-as-fuel is dramatically less volatile (and more tightly regulated) than petroleum-based vehicle fuels. But here's the other really big advantage that electricity offers: It's produced domestically. That means that the dollars that power EVs stay at home in our economy.

That's a big deal when you consider that the annual "oil bill" for Oregon is estimated at more than $6,000,000,000 (and the nation's yearly oil bill approaches $400 billion with much of paid to foreign sources).

If this domestic fuel message resonates with you, we have a tasteful way you can show it. Portland State University's Office of Research and Strategic Partnerships commissioned the creation of the two emblems shown above.

They come in two sizes. The smaller version is about the size of a softball. It is designed for display on the rear bumper of an all-electric vehicle. Made of high quality vinyl, the emblem is versatile enough to withstand the elements but durable enough to be removed without leaving paper residue or glue on your car. A larger version designed for the front door of an EV is about the size of a basketball.

Several emblems will be given away by a drawing at the National Plug-In Day event scheduled at Portland's Electric Avenue on September 22-23, 2012. They may also be obtained for a small contribution with the proceeds paying to support PSU student projects involving transportation electrification and other sustainable mobility projects.
