“Bodily Exploitation: An examination of rape in the U.S. military”
Wednesday, January 23rd, 1:00-3:00pm
at the PSU Women's Resource Center

Women and men’s bodies are exploited by the United States military. Inasmuch as the purpose of the military is to organize and train soldiers for conducting war, the bodies of soldiers are utilized in various ways toward this end. “Casualties” of war include official and unofficial body counts as well as injuries including loss of limbs and traumatic brain injuries. More recently, light has been shed upon the ways in which men and women are sexually exploited by other soldiers and those in positions of leadership. Interpretation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice has officially sanctioned this exploitation via the Feres Doctrine. This interpretation has resulted in those sexually assaulted by other members of the military to no recourse or justice, but rather, to view the sexual assault of their body as part of serving in the military.
