"Planning the Smart Grid for Sustainable Communities" an Interactive Conference - June 15, 2010

Second Annual Interactive Conference on Planning the Smart Grid for Sustainable Communities

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Join faculty and students of Portland State University (PSU) and business, government, planning and design, utility, and community leaders for the second annual Interactive Conference on Planning the Smart Grid for Sustainable Communities. This conference will explore how the concepts, technologies, and business models associated with the Smart Grid can support sustainable communities in the Portland metro area, Oregon and the greater Pacific Northwest region. It features keynote presentations from two nationally known experts on how the Smart Grid can support sustainable communities:

  • Allan Schurr, Vice-President, Strategy and Development for IBM Global Energy & Utilities Industry, is highly regarded for his work around the world helping utilities and other clients use Smart Grid technologies and approaches to support the integration of wind and other renewable energy sources, and distributed energy assets such as plug-in electric vehicles.
  • Jose Beceiro is the Director of Clean Energy at the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce and the treasurer and board member of Austin's Pecan Street Project. This collaboration is the nation's most advanced and ambitious initiative to promote and test the Smart Grid as a set of tools and approaches that fundamentally redefines the energy delivery system and advances sustainable development.  An economic development specialist, Jose represents many in the Austin business community in various partnerships to further Austin's reputation as one of the "Clean Energy Capitals of the World."

The Pecan Street Project is just beginning to be recognized in the national media and trade publications for both its ambitious plans and impressive manner in which it has organized itself to achieve results. A unique research, development, and demonstration collaboration between public, private, academic and NGO stakeholders, its board is comprised the recently retired general manager of the local utility (Austin Energy), the chair of the University of Texas' School of Engineering, a senior representative of the Austin Chamber of Commerce (Jose Beceiro), the director of the Austin Technology Incubator, a senior leader of the Environmental Defense Fund, and a member of the Austin City Council. In addition to our keynote speakers, this conference features presentations from three interdisciplinary teams of graduate students and mid- and senior-level professionals who have participated in the second year of Portland State University's two-term graduate seminar called Planning the Smart Grid for Sustainable Communities.  The student teams will present their analysis of and recommendations for one of three "live" case studies that consider how the Smart Grid can be applied to support sustainable development in the Portland and Salem metro areas.  Read more about the reasons for our conference, how the Northwest has become a Smart Grid and sustainability leader, and the teams of advisors for our Smart Grid Seminar and case studies.

Since this in an interactive conference, it will also involve you.  All conference participants will have an opportunity to participate in "roundtable" discussions on the case study presentations and report back to the conference as a whole.  The conference also includes an "open mic" session for more interaction.
