GSE Academic Hooding Ceremony

The GSE Academic Hooding Ceremony is a special and time-honored experience reserved for master's and doctoral degree recipients. Students are acknowledged for achieving their advanced degree and receive the cherished traditional hood, that in academia signifies their school, degree, and field of study. Traditionally held on a Friday in June, it is a time when faculty, staff, family and friends come together in a more personal event to focus on and honor the graduate’s accomplishments.

University Commencement Ceremony

In addition to the GSE Academic Hooding Ceremony, GSE graduates are invited to participate in the Portland State University Commencement, where students have their degrees conferred. There are two PSU commencement ceremonies this year. Both will be held Sunday, June 16, 2013, at the Rose Garden Arena. Students from the Graduate School of Education will participate at the afternoon ceremony that begins at 3:30pm. To participate in commencement you must register separately from the GSE ceremony. If you have any questions about commencement, please send them to commencement@pdx.edu.

To participate in the GSE Academic Hooding Ceremony

All master and doctoral students in the Graduate School of Education who graduated in fall 2012, or winter, spring, summer, or fall 2013, are invited to participate.

To participate these steps are required:

  1. Register with the GSE - Complete the online form by June 1.
  2. Reserve your tickets – Graduates who are walking may have up to five guest tickets for the Academic Hooding Ceremony. We are using an online ticketing service where you will download and print your own tickets. You will use your ODIN account to login to the ticketing system. If you need additional tickets, contact Susan Shortridge to put your name on a waiting list.
  3. Order regalia - To participate in the GSE Academic Hooding Ceremony, graduates must wear academic regalia (cap, gown, hood/cowl, and tassel). Regalia can be purchased through the Office of Student Affairs online or through the Portland State University Bookstore.
Note: The tassel color for a master's in education is light blue and old gold for doctoral.
