Faculty, staff and students in the Graduate School of Education celebrate master's and doctoral degree recipients in June of each year with a special "Hooding" ceremony. This is an opportunity for our community to come together and honor our graduates, faculty and staff. In addition to the Hooding Ceremony, our graduates participate in Portland State University's Commencement Ceremonies held each June and August.
Students should register online to participate in the GSE's Academic Hooding ceremony.
Master's and doctoral students graduating Fall of 2008 or Winter, Spring, or Summer of 2009 are encouraged to participate. If you graduate Fall 2009, check with the Dean's Office about participating in the Hooding.
Graduates need to gather at 4:45 PM (and no later than 5:00 PM) in the small gym of the Peter Stott Center. The event lasts around 2 hours.
At 5:30 p.m., graduates in academic regalia file into the gym. Following introductory remarks, Education faculty bestow the academic hood, or cowl, on each graduating masters and doctoral-level student.
The School of Education's Academic Hooding is separate from Commencement, the University-wide graduation ceremony.
Any graduate planning to participate in Academic Hooding must register with the School using the online form.
Registering will ensure you have a chair for the graduate at the ceremony and space for your guests.
Julie Thompson in the Dean's office handles registration submissions. If you have questions, email her at julit@pdx.edu.
You must register for PSU's Commencement separately from the GSE's Academic Hooding ceremony.
To participate in Academic Hooding grads must wear academic regalia (cap, gown, hood/cowl, and tassel). The color for Education is light blue. The color for PSU is dark green. Academic regalia will be available through the PSU Bookstore online (phone: 503-226-2631). Master's students buy their regalia; doctoral students rent theirs. Doctoral and faculty garb must be ordered, so don't wait until the last minute.
Questions about Academic Hooding should be directed to Julie Thompson in the Dean's Office, ED 608; phone: 503-725-4697; email julit@pdx.edu. Due to space considerations, graduates are asked to limit the number of guests to around 5. There is no admission fee and no ticket required to attend.
The Office of Graduate Studies needs know you are graduating via the Application for Degree, in addition to the GSE (and the Commencement office). Check graduate candidate deadlines and information about the steps to graduate.
Among the requirements for graduation, students must fill out an online Application for Awarding of a Master's or Doctoral Degree and submit it to the Office of Graduate Studies (117 Cramer Hall). Master's students also must turn in a GO12 (Approved Graduate Degree Program). Check with Grad Studies and/or your department.
