24th Academic Hooding Ceremony

Friday, June 12, 2015
5-8pm (approximately)

Peter Stott Center, PSU Campus
930 SW Hall Street
Portland, OR 97201

This time-honored special ceremony is reserved for master’s and doctoral degree recipients who will be acknowledged for achieving their advanced degree and receive the traditional hood, that in academia signifies their school, degree, and field of study. This year’s event will be held in the Peter Stott Center and includes a short program, followed by a presentation and hooding of the graduates. Family and friends are welcome, however due to limited seating capacity, each graduate is limited to four guest tickets (the graduate is not required to have a ticket). There is no charge for the tickets.

Eligibility: All masters and doctoral students graduating fall 2014-fall 2015 are eligible to participate.

NOTE: We do not check doctoral hooding registrants with the Office of Graduate studies.

To participate in the GSE Academic Hooding Ceremony follow these steps

  1. Complete the online GSE Hooding Ceremony registration form by May 31, 2015.
  2. Regalia
Participating graduates and faculty are required to wear the full academic regalia: cap, gown, hood, and tassel.
    • The hood has light blue that represents Education and dark green that represents PSU
    • The tassel color for a master’s in education is light blue, and for doctoral is old gold
    • Master’s students buy their regalia; doctoral candidates rent theirs

The University works with regalia provider Herff Jones, out of Vancouver, WA. Their pre-order deadline passed and online orders are closed. So now you can reserve your cap & gown from them at the Spirit Store in the Smith Memorial Student Center. Students may also purchase regalia and other graduation gear from Jostens at the PSU Bookstore. We recommend getting your regalia as soon as possible.

  3. Reserve guest tickets
Graduates who are participating in the hooding ceremony may reserve up to four complimentary guest tickets to the ceremony, as long as ticket supply lasts. (Graduates do not need a ticket.)
To manage space available, the GSE uses a stand-by list system for graduates who wish to request additional tickets. Add your name to the stand-by ticket list in the box office to request up to four (4) more tickets. Once you have added your name to the list, you don't need to do anything else. Closer to the event, the GSE will assess space remaining at this event. Then, stand-by tickets will be allocated on a space-available, first-come basis, based on the time you signed up on the list. Simply watch your e-mail after June 10th. If you get allotted additional tickets, they will be e-mailed to you.
  4. Preregister for official photographs (optional)
Professional photographers from GradImages will be taking photographs at the ceremony. You can preregister for your photographs online, or at the ceremony.
  5. Watch your email and read the hooding ceremony instruction email when it arrives.
  6. Friday, June 12: Participate in the ceremony
