OUS Italy - Summer

Removed from the tourist crowds, and at the heart of one of Italy's most traditional regions, Siracusa, Sicily offers you an opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and language of this amazing Mediterranean island. Ancient temples, bustling marketplaces, ornate churches, winding mazes of streets, and above all, friendly people will provide an amazing environment for a summer of learning and exploring. Program Focus

The Siracusa, Sicily summer program offers a unique opportunity to begin or continue your Italian language study, while learning about the ancient and modern cultures of Italy. The academic components of this program will focus on the study of Italian language as well as the history and literature of Sicily in a Mediterranean context. Through the work of contemporary novelists such as Verga, Sciascia, Tomasi di Lampedusa and Consolo, the course will provide an understanding of the most important Sicilian and Italian literary works and the cultural context in which they were produced, the intricacies of Sicilian history and culture, the complex relationship of the island with the rest of Italy and the importance of its presence in the Mediterranean today. Through lectures and discussions students will examine the current issues of this fascinating region while through field trips they will explore the country that has captivated people for centuries. In your free time, you'll have ample opportunity to visit Sicily's beautiful beaches, climb on Mt. Etna, and take advantage of all that an Italian summer has to offer.
