Students interested in pursuing an ECE major must apply to the program in order to take upper division courses within the department. Applications are available at the ECE office, and all applicants must also complete the Admissions Exam before the deadline. Students who have been accepted to the program will be informed via e-mail and must reply to inform the department whether or not they accept their enrollment.
Deadlines for applying to an undergraduate degree program:
Fall Cohort - April 15
Winter Cohort - August 15
Graduate applicants at PSU apply to both PSU Admissions and the ECE Department.
The PSU Application is at PSU Admissions. The PSU application must include:
- The University application form;
- The application fee;
- Copies of transcripts from every college or university attended (except PSU), including junior colleges and community colleges;
- The measles immunization form;
- TOEFL or IELTS scores are also required for international applicants.
The ECE department application is available online. The ECE department application must include:
- The online application;
- Email contact information for three references;
- Unofficial copies of all transcripts, which includes scanned copies (ready for upload) of transcripts for all post-secondary courses taken;
- GRE scores are required for applicants to the Ph.D. and the M.S. programs. All GRE scores must be reported to Institution Code 4610, Department Code 1201 or 1203. The GRE is waived for M.S. applicants who graduated with a B.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an ABET-Accredited institution.
Once your ECE application is complete you will receive an email from the ECE Department letting you know this component of the admission process is complete, and indicating an approximate processing time. When both the PSU and ECE applications are complete, the ECE Department will evaluate all application materials. For selected applicants, an ECE departmental recommendation for admission letter will be emailed to PSU Admissions and to the applicant. PSU Admissions will then review all application materials. If all is in order, PSU Admissions will send a formal letter to the applicant and generate an I-20, if needed.
Deadlines for applying to the masters program:
- Fall (September start) - February 1
- Winter (January start) - August 15
- Due to the sequence of classes, we generally do not admit students to our masters program for Spring or Summer
Deadlines for applying to the PhD program:
- Fall (September start) - March 1
- Winter (January start) - August 15 (prior year)
- Spring (March start) - November 1 (prior year)
- Summer (June start) - February 1
All materials, for both the PSU application and the ECE departmental application, must be received by these deadlines. Applications that are not complete by the deadline, will not be considered. Admissions are selective.
The Graduate Coordinator tries to answer all questions and inquiries within one business day. If you haven't heard back in a day or so, please be patient and don't send multiple emails. Please send one inquiry to firstname.lastname@example.org. Sending the same message to several email addresses slows down processing.
Frequently-Asked Questions for Graduate Applications
What is your GRE score cutoff?
Because all applicants are unique, we have no specific cutoff or minimum. It depends on your other qualifications.
What is your TOEFL/IELTS score cutoff? (International students)
We adhere to PSU standards. If your English language score is not passing, we will contact you to ask you whether you are willing to be considered for conditional admission. Remember, English language scores are taken into consideration when the Graduate Director makes admission decisions.
What's the GPA requirement?
By PSU standards, all incoming students must have a 2.5 GPA for conditional admission and a 2.75 GPA for regular admission. We normally expect students to have at least a 3.0 undergraduate GPA.
If a student has earned nine graduate credits or more, a 3.0 graduate GPA is required. The graduate GPA supersedes the undergraduate GPA in that case.
Please report your GPA using the system used by your university (i.e., GPA, percentage, 10-point scale, etc.).
Can you accept my application, even though it's after the deadline?
Unfortunately, we cannot. If you are a local student who wishes to start your program in Winter 2015, please discuss your options with Dr. Hall.
Do you accept applications for Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer?
PSU works on a quarter system. Fall normally starts in late September, Winter starts in January, Spring starts in March, and Summer starts in June.
Prospective masters students should apply for Fall or Winter. The ECE Department will not admit masters students for Spring and Summer quarters; please contact the Graduate Coordinator with questions.
Ph.D. applicants can apply for any term, but must have a complete application by the aforementioned deadlines.
Will I be admitted with my profile?
We cannot predict whether you would be admitted.
What's my application status?
You will receive an update on your application whenever we have one for you. If you haven't heard from us, you can assume that your application status is the same as the last time you were contacted.
Do not email or call to request an update on your application status.
How can I check my application status online?
You can check your letters of recommendation online. Otherwise, your application status is updated via email.
Have you recieved my GRE/TOEFL score?
It takes about two weeks for scores to arrive after being reported. Please plan to report your scores with plenty of time to arrive before the deadline.
We will confirm the completeness of your application when it is processed. We cannot confirm receipt of scores before that time. Please plan to apply early.
How do I apply for financial aid?
There are several forms of financial aid.
For information on financial aid for domestic students, please contact PSU's Financial Aid office.
Scholarships are available for international and domestic students.
When will I get my I-20?
International Admissions will process the I-20 for international students after admission. The ECE Department has no involvement in the I-20 processing, so please direct any questions regarding this to email@example.com.
How do I get my PSU ID number?
Your PSU ID number will be provided by PSU Admissions after you apply and pay the application fee.
What do I need to mail to the ECE Department?
Nothing! The application for ECE is all done online. When you apply to PSU through the Admissions Office, they do need official documents. Please do not mail materials for the ECE application to PSU Admissions or any other office.
If you need to submit GRE scores, they should be submitted directly through ETS to University Code 4610, Department Code 1201 or 1203.
How can I submit my resume or SOP?
We do not review non-required items for MS students. Please do not send or submit them.
Is my file complete? The deadline is coming up!
Please be patient and wait to be updated. We want your application to be complete before the deadline, so we must work in the most efficient way possible.
