The Center for Public Service’s Oregon Fellows Program has successfully ended its 2011 cycle. This highly competitive 10-week full-time fellowship program is designed to bring national class talent to Oregon public enterprises. Over the last decade, more than 300 Oregon Fellows have completed projects for more than 80 organizations. This year we selected 35 Oregon Fellows, out of 150 applicants, and placed 22 Fellows in our Summer 2011 cohort. These men and women hailed not just from excellent NW-based graduate programs such as PSU, Oregon, Willamette University, and the University of Washington – but also from graduate schools at the University of Michigan, Duke, University of Texas and Harvard. The Fellows were placed with, state and local agencies, and not for profits such as WSDOT, PECI, Metro, City of Sandy, OUS, Salem Keizer School District and Oregon State Police.
Today the Oregon Fellows Program is more relevant and necessary than ever. The local, state, national and global challenges that confront public servants in governments and the non-profit sector have seldom seemed so daunting and “wicked” and the need for innovation, responsiveness and ethical leadership in our public service realm may never have been greater. The Oregon Fellows program helps sponsors meet these challenges by providing exceptional talent and sponsors help shape the future by providing Fellows an opportunity to do something meaningful and important in their field. In addition, sponsors help Fellows extend and deepen their understanding of Oregon and our principles and practices of sustainable leadership and management.
As we enter into the second decade of this integral program, we look forward to continuing to provide our public service colleagues access to this exceptional pool of diverse, smart, energetic, highly committed graduate students. It is important that we continue to train and provide meaningful career opportunities for this next generation of talent.
To honor our past and current sponsors, the Center for Public Service wil host a luncehon on September 22, 2011, from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM. The luncheon will be held in Room 750A at the Urban Center, which is located at 506 SW Mill Street, Portland, OR, 97201.

Here is what some of our recent Fellows and Sponsors have to say about the Oregon Fellows Program this year:
We could not have been more pleased with the high quality of the work product, which reflected tireless effort, a deep understanding of the subject matter, acute attention to detail and careful documentation.
--Paul W. Taylor, Editor at Large, Governing and Chief Content Officer, e.Republic, Inc.
The quality and quantity of their work exceeded our expectations. The technology project they have been assigned to is ongoing and we will be exploring opportunities to extend their work.
--Major Maureen Bedell, Oregon State Police
The Oregon Fellows experience was even more fulfilling than I anticipated. My sponsor understood my potential and kept my projects engaging and exciting, allowing me to express personal leadership while still providing me with enough direction and assistance to keep me learning. Having a strong cohort also helped broaden my professional and social connections during my time in Oregon, this definitely helped me gain a wider appreciation for the Oregon mindset. The relationships I built during my fellowship will continue to serve me throughout my career, wherever it may be.
--Josh Mahar, University of Washington
