Community building initiative for African American males
Building Brotherhood Overview
With such a highly populated commuter institution as Portland State University, African American Student Services recognizes the role of creating a sense of community particularly among African American males that will contribute to both retention and academic achievement. Hence, the Building Brotherhood initiative is available to African American males, who desire among other things, to find peer support among people with shared experiences.
Initially in 2010, Building Brotherhood started out as small focus groups with the intention of finding out what African American males felt they needed to insure their academic success at Portland State University. One of the recurring issues discussed was their lack of sense of community among other issues. Given the data from the focus groups, in 2011, Building Brotherhood evolved into a more structured program that consisted of workshops, trainings and lectures that were designed to address various concerns of the participants of the focus groups from the previous year. Currently Building Brotherhood is evolving more with participants taking more leadership in the design of the program as well as the planning and facilitating of the Building Brotherhood events.
What are the objectives of Building Brotherhood?
The vision of Building Brotherhood is to increase support, networking opportunities and professional and identity development among African American males at Portland State University. Participants are provided a safe space, workshops, peer and professional support. Building Brotherhood is for African American male students who are interested in coming together, with the intent, to overcome negative academic self-concept, stereotype threat, various forms of capital deficiencies and additional factors that impact African American male academic and professional outcomes.
